Why I don’t use Apple products

AUTHOR’S NOTE: As this is primarily a technology blog post and not primarily about writing, I have chosen to publish the original version of this blog post at Apollo Corner instead of at Apollo Corner Writing.

I’ve noticed quite a few authors that I follow on Twitter, YouTube, and/or other social media websites using Apple devices extensively. I do market some of my writing and writing-related endeavors to Apple platforms, such as making Lady in the Fast Lane available on Apple Books and making The Heartland Author Podcast available on Apple Podcasts, although neither of those are exclusive to Apple by any means. However, I have never owned an Apple electronic device of any kind.

I do understand that there are people who use Apple devices for one reason or another. I am not criticizing anyone who uses Apple devices. However, there are two main reasons why I don’t use Apple devices.

Reason #1 – They’re too expensive

As a general rule, Apple products are overpriced and/or out of my price range. I’ll use a pair of Apple devices, one of which is a laptop and the other is a tablet marketed as a laptop replacement, and a HP laptop to illustrate this point.

Currently, the base models of both the 12.9″ iPad Pro tablet and the MacBook Air laptop (I’m regarding the 11″ iPad Pro as a separate device from the 12.9″ iPad Pro for the purpose of defining a “base model”), both Apple products, cost $999 before tax and shipping. That price does not include various accessories, which you’ll probably need, and, given Apple’s minimalist philosophy towards including accessories with their devices, will probably end up costing you a lot. Additionally, that price doesn’t include any performance upgrades to the devices themselves, such as faster processors, which add more to the cost. The YouTube channel GregsGadgets compared the 12.9″ iPad Pro and the MacBook Air, and anything I could add would likely be redundant.

At the same $999 price point, however, HP makes an Envy laptop, which runs Microsoft’s Windows 10 operating system, and it’s not the base model of the Envy, which is even less expensive. Furthermore, with the Envy, you don’t have to choose between a touchscreen tablet with a keyboard add-on and a laptop without a touchscreen, as the Envy is a true touchscreen laptop with a full 360-degree hinge. While the Envy doesn’t counter every advantage of the iPad Pro or the MacBook Air, it is simply a far better value at a similar price point. While I currently use the HP Stream laptop, which is a reliable low-end laptop, I would recommend the Envy to anyone looking for a laptop costing somewhere in the vicinity of $1,000.

Reason #2 – The Apple ecosystem

YouTube tech guru Marques Brownlee produced a video that is stuck in my mind for one reason in particular. Brownlee described the Apple tech ecosystem as “a walled garden”. Apple has, under the late Steve Jobs’s leadership, developed a large tech ecosystem that is, with some exceptions, not compatible with non-Apple devices and is largely walled off from the rest of the consumer electronics world. Also, Apple’s tech ecosystem is largely, but not totally, complete. Apple products include the iPod media devices, iPhone smartphones, iPad tablets, and Macintosh (Mac) laptop and desktop computers, among others, and Apple has many services that can sync across multiple Apple devices. There are a ton of hooks into the Apple ecosystem, and you’ll probably spend more money than necessary on consumer electronics once you get hooked into the Apple ecosystem.

One notable exception to the completeness of the Apple ecosystem is the fact that Apple no longer makes printers and scanners. Apple used to make printers until the late 1990’s, but they have long since discontinued making their own printers. If one goes to the Printers and Scanners webpage under Mac Accessories on the Apple Website, you’ll find that Apple recommends…you guessed it…HP printers and scanners.

Whoever hung a noose in Bubba Wallace’s garage stall should be permanently banned from any active involvement in motorsports.

Yesterday, the day the GEICO 500 NASCAR Cup Series race had originally been rescheduled for until rain postponed the event to today, a noose was found hanging in the Talladega Superspeedway garage stall of driver Darrell “Bubba” Wallace, Jr.

NASCAR officials have, as of this writing, not yet found the perpetrator of the noose hanging in Wallace’s garage stall, although NASCAR has promised to permanently ban whoever was responsible for the heinous act. Furthermore, the FBI has opened a criminal investigation into the incident.

Let me make this perfectly clear: whoever hung a noose in Bubba’s garage stall should be permanently banned from having any active involvement in any form of motorsports. Hanging nooses to intimidate black Americans has a long and dark history, and, even though NASCAR has, in these troubling times, sought to make itself a more inclusive organization, there is, and probably always will be, a segment of the NASCAR can base that holds an extremely racist view of society.

I stand with Bubba. Period.

Returning to blogging after oral surgery

Earlier today, I underwent oral surgery, which resulted in the successful removal of my upper right wisdom tooth. I am recovering at home extremely well; in fact, I may be able to begin eating solid food once again as early as tomorrow morning. The oral surgery procedure I underwent was actually a simple tooth extraction; a more complicated procedure was not necessary because the roots of the extracted tooth had not penetrated into my sinus. The procedure was an outpatient procedure performed by Dr. Mark W. Andersson, whose office is located in Danville, Illinois.

As I was struggling with tooth infections prior to my most recent oral surgery, I put Apollo Corner, Apollo Corner Politics, Apollo Corner Sports, and Apollo Corner Writing on hiatus. However, I will begin writing new blog posts on all of the Apollo Corner blogs once again.

I recently launched a Facebook page to promote my writing endeavors, and I will be launching Facebook pages for each of the Apollo Corner blogs very soon.

My father died earlier today

It is with a great sense of sadness that I announce that, this afternoon, my father, Franklin Paul Camp, Sr., died suddenly in his garage. He was 72 years of age at the time of death. No autopsy will be performed, and he will, per his wishes, be cremated.

I am not a licensed medical professional, coroner, or medical examiner, but my father survived a heart attack over a decade and a half ago, and, while the cause of his death has not yet been officially listed, he likely suffered a sudden cardiac death that he simply could not be revived from. I had initially suspected that he had poisoned himself to death by consuming gasoline, but this was later found to not be the case. Additionally, he lost a tooth as his head hit the cement floor of the garage, although any dental or head injuries that he suffered or may have suffered were probably not severe enough to be the cause of death. I did not witness my dad collapse, as he was in an area of the property that I rarely access for any reason; furthermore, I had trouble locating my dad at first, as my dad was wearing clothing that was of a similar color to the cement floor of the garage, which made it difficult to recognize my dad due to him being effectively camouflaged against the cement floor. After finding my dad unconscious without a pulse and not breathing in the garage, I attempted to perform CPR on him despite not having any formal CPR training and knowing that my dad had probably been dead for one hour or more at that point; once paramedics arrived, they performed CPR on him. Given how suddenly he died, even if I had been able to begin CPR within seconds of his collapse, I don’t think that anyone with any level of training could have revived him. My dad had a routine outpatient blood test performed on him several hours before his death, although there was no evidence of medical malpractice or major bleeding; furthermore, my dad seemed healthy aside from a minor cold and sinus infection he had the last time I saw my dad alive.

My father worked a number of mostly blue-collar jobs before becoming permanently disabled after his first cardiac event. My father was a blue-collar person at heart; he enjoyed doing home repair projects around the house. My father didn’t share as much of an interest in sports as my mother and I do, but he was a devout Chicago Cubs fan who lived long enough to see, via television, the Cubs win the World Series.

In lieu of flowers or physically visiting me at my home, to help me pay for my father’s final expenses, you can buy my eBook, Lady in the Fast Lane, from any one of the eBook sellers you see listed on this webpage. Furthermore, you can buy me anything off of my Amazon wishlist as a gift.

An update on what has been going on in my life

You may have noticed that I’ve been taking a sabbatical from blogging for the last several weeks. I’m back now.

The primary reason why I’ve been away from blogging is because I’ve been suffering from depression-like symptoms for the past several months. While I’m awaiting an opening in psychiatry services in my area, I have been prescribed citalopram, the generic form of Celexa, to treat my depression-like symptoms, which I am required to take a single dose of daily.

Another reason why I’ve been away from blogging is because my mother has been ill for the last few months. From January 4 to February 14, my mother spent all but five hours of that time frame in either a hospital or a rehabilitation facility. My mother had a malignant tumor on her colon and severe inflammation of her colon, which required colostomy surgery that was performed on January 7. While my mother is home now, she still has an open surgical wound and uses a colostomy bag, both of which regular home health care services. My mother uses a four-wheeled walker, also called a rollator, as a mobility aid, although, even with the rollator, she has trouble walking long distances. On March 5, my mother was in the emergency room again for a few hours and received treatment for blood clots in at least one of her legs before being released from the emergency room. My mother has to be very careful doing even basic tasks, as she has an open surgical wound and is taking a blood thinner.

I am slowly beginning to get my life back on track, and part of that includes returning to writing blog posts from time to time. However, my mother owes a lot of money in medical bills, my household had to spend several hundred dollars to replace the range at my house due to a gas leak earlier this month, and I’m not currently able to buy things that I would love to have. If you wish to purchase gifts for me, you can view my Amazon wish list here and buy one or more items on my wish list for me.

Statement regarding the status of The Chronicles of Vazkelt series

AUTHOR’S NOTE: This blog post was originally posted to Reddit by the administrator of this blog. The original post can be viewed here.

Due to the recent helicopter crash in California that claimed the lives of nine individuals, including basketball legend Kobe Bryant, I have cancelled work on a planned sports romance fiction novella which would have been part of The Chronicles of Vazkelt series and would have had a plot involving a fictional indoor volleyball team being killed in an aviation crash. Furthermore, as I have no other planned books in the series, no further books in The Chronicles of Vazkelt series will be written or published, although I do intend to write and self-publish books outside of The Chronicles of Vazkelt series.

I offer my condolences to the family and friends of Kobe Bryant.

An update regarding the health of my mother

Nearly a week ago, my mother was hospitalized after days of extreme pain and discomfort in her abdominal region that made her unable to move. Last weekend, she was transported via ambulance to OSF Sacred Heart hospital in Danville, Illinois.

My mother suffered from multiple medical ailments affecting her body’s excretory functions and ability to move. She underwent surgery on Tuesday to repair a hernia and remove part of her colon, the latter of which required attachment of an colostomy bag. She is still at the hospital and recovering well from surgery.

Current plans are for her to be transferred to a rehabilitation facility once she is well enough to begin rehabilitation (hopefully early next week), as she has to completely relearn how to walk, among other things.

I am able to visit my mother on a daily basis, however, I have not been able to do much in the way of book-writing or blogging work since Christmas Day due to me familiarizing myself with a laptop that my mom bought me before having to be hospitalized and my mother’s health. However, I will try to increase the rate of my blogging and book-writing work in the coming days while still visiting my mother daily.
